Sapporo is host to an annual snow festival for a week in early February.
Around 2 million people flock to Sapporo just to see the ice sculptures.
There are three sites:
Odori – the biggest with the biggest sculptures and also smaller ones and competitions. Also lots of food stalls and snacks. Even a giant ski ramp.
Tsudome – Aimed at the kids with games, small sculptures and stalls.
Susukino – Mainly ice sculptures that are illuminated at night.
It is a real winter wonderland.
Temperatures are way below zero, you can fit half as many people in the trains because everyone wearing too many layers and you have to see everything twice because it looks totally different illuminated at night.
But it’s so worth it.
