#060 Itsukushima Shrine

I bet you think this shrine is awesome… even if you didn’t know it’s name before.

Everyone has seen this iconic gate‘s picture somewhere before:


Itsukushima (also called Miyajima) in Hiroshima prefecture is home to this shrine and is one of Japan’s top tourist spots. Also the area has been designated a world heritage site.


The bright red shrine is surrounded by water and has a totally different feel when the tide is in compared to when the tide is out.


And you can go up to the big torii gate and put coins in it for good luck when the tide is out:
