#121 Temizuya

Before you enter a shrine in Japan you should purify yourself with the water fountain.

That fountain is called ‘temizuya’ or ‘chozuya’ / 手水舎.

There are often ornately decorated taps with bamboo ladles to spoon the water.

Some are much more simple.

The procedure is the same:

Take the ladle at the purification fountain – fill it then rinse your left hand. Fill it again then rinse your right.
Then pour some water into your hand and put it into your mouth from your now-purified hands.
Rinse your mouth and spit the water out just beside the fountain.

Now you’re ready to go!
