#128 Gairaigo

Gairaigo/外来語 means ‘foreign loan words’.

Things like personal computer are abbreviated to PasoCon/”パソコン” or department store to Depaato/”デパート”.

These words are often written in the katakana script

It makes reading menu’s easier (unless they’re in Italian or French…).

But sometimes it is hard to make sense of the Katakana-isation.

For example, anketto”アンケット” is a foreign loan word from French meaning questionnaire.

Recently, an elderly gentlemen in Gifu complained that the overuse of gairaigo is distressing… read about it here.
