NHK is to Japan as BBC is to Britain…
…that is, their national broadcasting organisation.
NHK stands for ‘Nippon Hoso Kyokai’ but is usually referred to as NHK.
Their slogan is まっすぐ、真剣 / Straightforward, earnest.
Oh, NHK, you’re so deep!
Their shows range considerably varying from news and emergency reporting to documentaries and movies.
They also put on a lot of educational shows – for example… you can learn various languages and buy the study-along books for around 500 yen from bookstores!
It’s publicly run by the subscription fees paid by viewers… which is why the NHK fee collectors have such a reputation.
Going from door to door to collect fees is quite notorious. Recently, it was a prominent feature of Haruki Murakami‘s 1Q84.
