Since opening in 1979 it has been a haven for women’s fashion
The store has an energy – bustling with girls hanging out and the shop staff shouting ‘irrashaimase’… it’s definitely an experience
But…. why is it called 109?
109 is a clever wordplay. It’s pronounced ‘ichi maru kyuu’ (one circle nine).
But it can also be read as ‘tou’ for ten and ‘kyuu’ for nine… ‘Tokyu’. That’s because the owners of the department store are called Tokyu.
It’s a clever rebranding of their image… and now 109 is symbolic of street fashion for young people. It has even expanded to a 109Men’s just across the street. And also other big cities, like Shizuoka, Yokohama and Osaka, have their own 109’s.
