#209 Genkan

The genkan is small area inside the entrance of a building

This is where outdoor shoes are left and indoor shoes are put on.

玄関/genkan means entryway. It’s made up of the character 玄 meaning mysterious and 関 meaning connection or gateway.

They can be found in places like apartments, schools and clinics.

Often the genkan is lower than the rest of the floor in the building to keep mud and dirt out.

So… less cleaning and a longer life for your carpets.
