Shogi is also known as ‘Japanese Chess’.
将棋 means ‘generals board game’
It has similarities to chess with the pieces, their arrangement on the board and playing to get a checkmate.
There are different rules and the rectangular pieces aren’t differentiated by colour, just direction.
It is a very popular game with a very long history – it is thought to have been in its current form for over 500 years.
It even has TV shows dedicated to it.
Check out Shogi’s wiki page for more detailed info on the pieces and history.
