Umbrellas are an essential item in Japan and everyone uses them.
Kasa/傘 is umbrella in Japanese. The character itself looks a lot like an umbrella.
People end up getting caught out in the rain a lot.
But buying umbrellas is cheap and you can get them anywhere from 100 yen stores and convenience stores to real department stores.
There are umbrella racks outside all convenience stores and businesses to leave your umbrella when you go inside.
Just be careful as sometimes people without umbrellas pinch one for themselves.
Also, Japan has it’s own style of umbrella called the wagasa.
It is made from paper and bamboo and is a symbol of beauty and elegance.
