#277 Daruma

Daruma/達磨 are small round dolls.

They are considered a toy but are also a lucky charm.

They look like Bodhidharma who was the buddhist monk that started the Zen sect of buddhism.

They’re usually red with two blank eyes and some facial hair.

You paint one eye when you make a wish.

When the wish comes true you paint in the other eye.

Right after new years day all of the daruma are brought back to the shrine you bought them from and burnt.

This is when you can buy new daruma and make a wish for the new year!
