#299 Graduation Ceremonies

Graduation ceremonies are called sotsugyou shiki/卒業式.

Elementary school, Junior High, Senior High and University all have graduation ceremonies.

They’re usually a day full of strict single-file walking into and out of the hall, sitting, standing, bowing

singing the school song and national anthem

listening to speeches

All the school students are in their uniforms  and the teachers are in suits.
(usually the rebellious kids with blonde hair at high school have it sprayed black for the occasion)

Often students wear a special boutonnièrethe flower arrangements pinned to their uniforms.

University graduations have suits or kimono (for women).

Also, university graduates sometimes go on a graduation trip abroad or somewhere in Japan.

It’s associated with cherry blossoms, as the school year finishes at the end of March.
