Taiyaki comes from “tai” which is the Red Snapper fish, and “yaki” which means grilled.

The only tai in this though… is the shape.

It is pancake batter in a fish shape filled with a sweet filling – from the traditional red bean paste to chocolate, cream and custard.

They are often sold at neighbourhood stalls or festivals. But you can buy frozen packets to cook at home.
