In rural Japan you’ll see these strange looking structures.
They look a little like mini-convenience stores – open 24 hours with bright signs.
But they are rice whitening/polishing machines.
They are called コイン精米機/coin seimaiki.
It buffs the outer surface to change the appearance, taste and texture of the rice.
They avoid the farmers having to buy costly machinery themselves and can be used by the whole farming community.
