#384 Banana Yoshimoto

Banana Yoshimoto is a female writer of short stories and novels.

Her most famous book is called “Kitchen”.

It is two very short stories:

One about a girl dealing with the loss of her grandmother by living with her grandmother’s acquaintance and his transgender mother.

The second about a girl who meets a strange woman and the boundary between the world, dreams, life and death is hazy.

Many of her stories deal with loss and ordinary, every day life.

She has western influences but her writing gives an unique insight into the Japanese psyche.

By the way, her real name isn’t Banana, it’s Mahoko.
