#397 Yamadera

Yamadera is a temple located in Yamagata prefecture.

The temple is a nationally-designated Place of Scenic Beauty and a Historic Site.

山寺/yamadera literally means 山ーmountain 寺ーtemple.

It was founded over 1000 years ago.

It’s popular because the famous poet Basho wrote a poem here.

You can still see his statue with an inscription of the poem.
