Wakakusayama Yamayaki is a festival held in Nara prefecture.
It is held on the second Sunday of January every year.
The mountains dead grass is set of fire and burns for around 30 minutes.
Yamayaki/山焼き literally means “mountain burning”.
After that they set off some fireworks – in case you hadn’t had enough fire yet.
This festival commemorates a feud between the monk’s of two of Nara’s temples (Tōdai-ji and Kōfuku-ji) which resulted in part of the mountain being torched in 1760.
