#448 Homemade Umeshu

Fermenting your own wine or brewing your own beer sounds quite intimidating.

There are so many factors to consider and so much equipment.

Umeshu is a delicious sweet alcoholic beverage.

It’s ridiculously simple to make at home.

Every year around the end of May and beginning of June shops start to stock the 青梅/ao ume, blue plums (yeah.. Japan has that funny thing with blue and green).

They also stock the containers, sugar and plain white alcohol.

Umeshu is often called plum wine, but it’s really a kind of liqueur.

If you put all of the ingredients together in layers with the alcohol and wait one year it’ll be ready!

You can even check out a recipe on cookpad here (you remember, our article on cookpad, right?)
