#465 Tomioka Silk Mill

Tomioka Silk Mill is located in Gunma prefecture.

It was made a world heritage site in 2014.

It was one of the starting points of modernisation in Japan.

They could mass-produce silk with French experts overseeing the mill and it’s operation.

So, Japan-France trade and their relationship was strengthened around 200 years ago.

You can visit the factories, houses and facilities in the compound.

It is an interesting mix seeing French architecture in Japan.

You can see a demonstration of the French silk-reeling machine on Wednesdays.

And you can even try it yourself on the weekends.
