#506 Kohaku Uta Gassen

紅白歌合戦/Kohaku Uta Gassen is an end of year TV show in Japan.

It is a giant music competition.

It means “Red and White Song Battle”.

The program divides the most popular music artists of the year into teams.

The red team is only female artists (or groups with female vocals).

And the white team is all guys (or groups with male vocals).

The artists and hand-picked and invited – so you already have to be super famous and popular to make it onto the show.

It was first broadcast on radio in 1951 – but now is the biggest NYE TV show in Japan.

New Year in Japan is a family event, so the comedy shows and musical performances are watched by millions as they cuddle up with their family for the new year.
