Finally, Japan’s main island – Honshu – will be linked to Hokkaido by high speed rail.
The construction work connecting the two islands began in 2005 through an undersea tunnel.
Shinkansen bullet trains already connect Kyushu and Honshu islands, and are a common way to go between Hiroshima, Kyoto, Osaka and Tokyo.
The line from Shin-Aomori to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto will open on March 26th 2016.
The completed line will continue on to the capital of Hokkaido, Sapporo city, and be finished in 2030.
Flying from Tokyo may still be quicker and easier, especially for the Snow Festival in Sapporo. But, it’ll be really convenient for those in northern Honshu!
