#550 Bamboo and Reed Screens

Bamboo screens are used in summer to block the rays and heat from the sun.

Summer in Japan can reach highs of 40 degrees celcius and are super humid.

The screens made from bamboo are called すだれ・Sudare.
よしず・Yoshizu are the screens made from reeds.

They are placed like blinds but for the outside of your house.

Of course, being the technologically advanced country that Japan is, air-conditioning is a staple in all homes.

Nevertheless, in big cities you’ll still see residential areas using the traditional bamboo screens to offer some extra relief from the summer sun.

They are sometimes sprayed with water because it is believed to lower the temperature around the screen.
