One of the perks of being a tourist is you get special treatment for only being there for a short time.
Although this isn’t a freebie it can save you a lot of cash on train tickets for travel across Japan.
The Japan rail pass is only available to foreign passport holders who are visiting Japan on a tourist visa.
It allows you full use of JR trains and all shinkansens (except the super fast Nozomi).
Since the shinkansen is connecting Hokkaido to Honshu you can visit all of Japan’s main islands by train (except for Okinawa… that’s a little too far).
The pass is available in 7 day, 14 day or 21 day periods.
You can also upgrade it to the ‘green car’ – the shinkansen version of first class.
